Our Family Trip to Durban

We had never actually thought of visiting Durban till hub's colleague said that we definitely MUST go for a visit before we go back to Singapore. Thus, we decided that it would be our last mini vacation in South Africa. I wasn't sure what I could see in Durban but didn't expect it to be so fun and entertaining. Plans were nicely arranged and catered for, especially for the kids.

1st Day:

Arrival At Sibaya Hotel. We were a little tired so we had dinner and went back to our hotel room. In the morning, we took a walk around the place and found the surroundings to be tranquil and relaxing. The kids enjoyed walking around and yes, looking for bugs.

We also discovered this spa place from Mangwanani Original African Spa Group which looked like heaven on earth. However, we never got a chance to try it as it didn't match our tour guide timings. Till next time! :)

2nd Day: On the second day, the tour guide brought us around the city centre.

A view from the top!

What we really enjoyed more was the Ushaka Underwater World, Ushaka Kids World and Ushaka Beach.

It was truly mesmerising as the whole place had a shipwreck kind of theme. The children also enjoyed watching the sharks and also experienced prawns eating the cells from their fingers. Now you know why some people don't eat prawns.......................

There was also this dining with the sharks experience. It was weird as we seemed to be eating their friends right in front of them.

There was a water area but we spent the time at the playground. Suddenly, the kids come running into the cafe screaming, "the bird is here!!!!!" They were so eager to pose a photo with the mascots.

Shooting at the people in the water play area!

Our last place for the day was Ushaka Beach. The sand was a little coarse, different from the beaches we went to.

A picture with the lighthouse in the background!

We went to Daruma for a great teppanyaki dinner in the evening with our friends. It is opened by a Japanese, thus the food was really authentic and awesome!

A picture together!

3rd Day: Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Cheese Farm

There were hundreds of the named animals but we spotted rather few during the game drive. I guessed it really depends on your luck. I just wished we had invested in a pair of binoculars.

Mummy rhino and baby rhino.

One of my favourite activities was milking the goat. Imm also had a great time and we could also drink the fresh milk after that. One of the workers also showed us how cheese was made.

4th Day: St Lucia

This was our cosy little house at St Lucia. It is a hippo town where hippos would come out and roam the streets at night.

Lovely views......

We took a walk at the beach nearby after that. It was untainted and gorgeous in the upcoming sunset.

Breakfast at St Lucia.

5th Day: Visit to Zulu Village

It was indeed a nice experience learning about the zulu culture and they also performed a dance for us which hub joined in! :)

We definitely had lots of lovely memories at this place! I was glad all plans fell into place and we could make this trip happen as it was a last minute decision..... :)

Ratanga Junction - Our Cape Town Theme Park

Well, I have to emphasize again, I simple love the fact that we are overseas and don't have to spend a bomb on children's entertainment... I love to see the joy on my children's faces but it would be nice to see them without also seeing a hole in my pocket.

Today we made a trip to Ratanga Junction, a theme park across our place only. We took about 20 minutes to walk there. It was actually rather cold so we thought twice about going. But because we already planned this (and Ratanga is open during specific time periods), we just decided to get our butts moving.

Here is the map of the Theme Park!!

As Reiko is too young, she is unable to go on any rides herself. Only Immanuel will go on the rides. And for the rides he likes, he will go a few times. There was no queue due to the weather but we missed the bustle of a theme park, ironically.

This is one of the mini train rides that they can take together. I was the photographer for that day and did not purchase any ticket as it was sufficient for hub to accompany Reiko.

In fact they liked it so much, they sat for 3 rounds. Red, blue and yellow. They should have sat once more on the green one and it will be completed.

This is a ride that goes up and around slowly.

Another type of aeroplane ride for Imm!

This is like a mini Ferris wheel.

Taking off!

Another of Immanuel's favourite rides is the crocodile swamp. In this picture, he wanted to pee badly and I said "quickly, let's take a picture first" - that was why he looked a bit awkward.

He loved this crocodile ride which goes one round in the water. It also has mini peaks and splashes that are just nice for him.

Bumper cars for his age! There was another side with bumper cars for adults and most were queuing around the other side.

Well, children have moods. This face painting was very near the entrance but Immanuel refused to paint his face when there was no queue. After all the rides, we asked him again and this time, he wanted. Somehow, all the boys love Spiderman very much in Cape Town and there were lots of Spidermen in the theme park that day.

It is painful to be a hero, I can do it!!

Tada! The sacrifice is worth it!!

After some rides, we went to watch a Bird's show at the general entertainment area where there were food and drinks. Reiko was more interested in these and will ask where the birds were as they kept flying around.

There were also dances by the mascots.

After our lunch, we went and walked around. We went to this place where both of them could ride scooters around the area. Reiko could not move around much on her own yet. Imm would try to help her by holding her or pushing her scooter from behind.

Our last ride was at the carousel.

There was a mini lego area and Immanuel was more interested in that.

Reiko was more interested in well, just walking around.

Goodbye to Ratanga Junction!!!

The negative side was that Hub and I could not take the rides. Sometimes, what we really want is to scream at the top of our lungs to destress from the kids but then again, it was worth it to spend time together as a family.

We spent about $40 for the 4 of us.

Here is the link to the parking rates there.
